Future Research Plans

Although much of my research, which has appeared in places like Comparative Strategy, the Non-Proliferation Review, and the Yale Journal of International Affairs, has focused on nuclear-related issues, I am more of a political philosopher at heart, which a particular interest in and fascination with human behavior in all its various contexts. So, looking ahead, my research will pursue three interrelated questions:

  1. How do interpretive divergences across nuclear and non-nuclear domains generate new escalation risks?
  2. How does value pluralism challenge existing arms control and nonproliferation regimes, and what alternative frameworks might better sustain nuclear order?
  3. What institutional adaptations are necessary for alliances and international organizations to preserve deterrence credibility in a multipolar world?

Taken together, my stability book and the introduction of valueism are not discrete projects, but the foundations for an ambitious intellectual program. They are designed to foster an entirely new generation of work—both my own and that of colleagues and students who take up these ideas—on the future of nuclear deterrence, legitimacy, human behavior, and international order.
