About Me

I am an Associate Professor of Military and Security Studies at the School for Advanced Nuclear Deterrence Studies, Air Command and Staff College. My research and teaching focus on nuclear deterrence, escalation dynamics, and international relations, emphasizing strategic stability and the role of nuclear weapons in shaping global security. This work bridges the worlds of theory, policy, and practice.

My Research

Strategic Stability and Interpretive Divergence

Strategic Stability and Interpretive Divergence

My research explores the evolving dynamics of nuclear deterrence, escalation dynamics, and strategic stability within an increasingly complex international relations framework. Across my work, I aim to bridge the theoretical traditions of international relations with the practical realities of nuclear weapons institutions and policy. Drawing on both academic inquiry and nearly a decade of professional experience within the U.S. nuclear enterprise, this dual perspective allows me to address the enduring puzzles of nuclear politics while developing frameworks that resonate with both scholars and practitioners.

Strategic Stability and Interpretive Divergence

My first major research trajectory investigates the shifting meaning of strategic stability in the context of international relations, particularly in an era characterized by multipolarity and technological change. This research also delves into escalation dynamics and the role of nuclear weapons. Click on the link below to learn more!

Nuclear Responsibility and Policy-Relevant Research

A second strand of my research advances a new theoretical framework that I call Valueism. It starts from the assumption that international relations is a battle over legitimacy, rather than a result of anarchy, particularly in the context of escalation dynamics involving nuclear weapons, which significantly impact strategic stability. A third line of research addresses the normative and policy dimensions of nuclear security, particularly in the context of escalation dynamics and their impact on international relations involving nuclear weapons and strategic stability.
